Star Vault issued a statement admitting that its security was breached for a short period of time on February 19. The hackers that accessed the site’s servers may have already utilized the information they obtained to “destroy in game assets” and make changes to the accounts.
A member of the game support team noticed the incident and Star Vault immediately came forward to alert Mortal Online customers that their accounts may be in peril.
Company representatives reassure players that the security hole that allowed for the incident to occur in the first place has been patched up and additional security measures have been implemented. They also report that private payment information has not been obtained since it’s so protected that not even they can access it.
“While we continue to gather evidence and look to our formal response to the individuals involved, it is important at this time that everyone to please check that their password is working as normal. If not please contact a member of the support team through a support ticket or on IRC,” SV representatives state.
“We are continuing to work through the logs and have completed many of the necessary repairs and restorations of assets but if you could please have patience as some of these are complex and time consuming.”
Mortal Online users are advised to immediately change their passwords to make sure that their assets are protected against malicious operations.
According to the Mortal Online forum, there are around 180,000 users that own game accounts. Star vault didn’t mention if their entire user database had been accessed or only part of it, but as a precaution, considering the large number of potential victims, the best thing to do is to change the account’s passwords.
Also, if the same password is being used to safeguard other accounts, all the passwords should be changed.
